Case Study Series #2: Beyond the Balance Sheet; Building Systems for Impact

Welcome back to the Elysys Client Use Case Blog Series, your bi-monthly blog of real challenges, real clients, and those pivotal moments when the right solution changes everything. For this second edition, we leave behind the familiar corridors of traditional investment management and step into new territory.

This time our case begins in Canada. A social finance fund. A mandate issued at the highest level. A fund built to make a difference who for all its vision and purpose had no complete system to capture, organise or demonstrate the impact it was created to deliver.

As conversations unfold and possibilities take shape, we follow the path where complexity meets clarity, where challenge invites innovation, and where the right solution emerges.

Stay with us as we explore how this fund found a way to manage its investments and to reveal the impact it had always set out to achieve.

Client presentation

Our client is a Canadian social finance fund, privately managed but publicly mandated. It receives 154 million CAD in capital from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), a federal agency focused on supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth through high-impact investments.

Acting as an intermediary between public funding and the private market, the fund allocates capital to initiatives that deliver both financial returns and measurable social impact. Its investments target areas such as minority-led businesses, environmentally responsible ventures, and organisations supporting underserved communities.

As part of its mandate, the fund must ensure strong transparency and accountability, requiring it to track, structure, and report both financial and ESG data across a complex network of partners, including social finance intermediaries and social purpose organisations.

Before Elysys

Before Elysys, the client ran almost entirely on Excel. Each investee entity had its own file. Investment managers and accountants worked from different sources. And when it came to impact reporting, tracking diversity metrics, environmental impact, governance data, there was no system.

The Elysys Solution

A first for Elysys: this project required building a brand-new module, the IMM (Impact Measurement & Management) module, designed to collect, standardise, and export ESG and social impact data to Canadian government bodies and funders. The deployment marks Elysys's entry into the impact investing vertical, a segment the firm intends to develop further across North America and Europe.

The engagement consolidated Boann's investment operations on a single Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central platform, combining the full Elysys suite: Wealth for portfolio management, Analytics for performance reporting, Loans for concessional and blended-finance instruments, and Multi-Company for entity-level segregation across the fund's vehicles. This replaced the spreadsheet workflows and disconnected systems that fragment most social finance operations, where impact, finance, and investment teams typically work from separate sources.

The most distinctive component is the IMM module itself. It ingests outcome and ESG data directly from investee organisations, structures it against the Common Approach to Impact Measurement (CAIM), and generates compliant exports in the Common Impact Data Standard (CIDS). Investment managers, impact analysts, and accountants now operate from a single shared dataset, with the same underlying records feeding financial consolidation, fund performance analytics, and external impact disclosures.

The operational impact for Boann is concrete: reporting cycles compressed from weeks to days, audit-ready impact data tied directly to financial records, and a platform that scales with deal volume rather than headcount. For Elysys, the project establishes a reusable blueprint for impact funds, with the module's architecture designed from day one to extend beyond CAIM to IRIS+, IMP, and SDG-aligned outputs as future clients require.

One platform, full picture

Investment managers and accountants now work from the same data, across all entities and funds, with no reconciliation overhead and no more version-control nightmares.

Impact data that actually means something

The custom IMM module standardizes social and environmental metrics from investee companies, making government reporting structured, consistent, and defensible.

A blueprint for impact investing

By building to the CAIM standard, Elysys has created a reusable framework that opens the door to an entirely new client segment. The market for ethical investment infrastructure is growing fast, and Elysys is now on it.

FAQs

What is impact measurement and management (IMM) software, and how does it relate to financial accounting?

Impact measurement and management software collects and standardises ESG and social impact data, such as diversity, environmental, and governance indicators, so it can be tracked with the same rigour as financial data. Keeping this data on the same platform as financial records avoids the manual reconciliation that happens when impact and finance are tracked separately. Elysys offers a dedicated IMM module built for this purpose.

How does software generate impact reporting that meets standardised government or funder frameworks?

The underlying impact data needs to be structured against a recognised framework, such as the Common Approach to Impact Measurement (CAIM), and then exported in a compliant format, like the Common Impact Data Standard (CIDS), that government bodies and funders can accept directly. Automating this removes a significant amount of manual formatting work each reporting cycle. Elysys's IMM module performs this process automatically.

What is blended or concessional finance, and can accounting software manage it?

Blended or concessional finance refers to investment instruments, often loans, structured with below-market terms to support a social or developmental objective alongside a financial return. Managing these instruments requires accounting that can handle non-standard terms and entity-level segregation across multiple funds or vehicles. Elysys Loans and Elysys Multi-Company are built to handle this combination.

What does a practical example of unified impact and financial reporting look like?

In practice, it means investment managers, impact analysts, and accountants all work from a single shared dataset, where the same records feed financial consolidation, performance analytics, and external impact disclosures. Elysys built a dedicated IMM module to achieve this for a social finance fund operating under a public mandate.
