The way financial operations teams interact with software is changing, and it's changing fast. At Elysys, we recently completed an internal review of the latest AI Agent capabilities now available natively inside Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, and the results are compelling.
AI Agents are autonomous assistants that can navigate Business Central, read data, fill in fields, trigger journal suggestions, and report back, all based on plain-English instructions you write yourself. No code required.
In a recent internal demo, our team built an agent in minutes that could automatically open the Elysys Loans module, locate a specific loan, trigger a deposit journal suggestion, populate the correct date, filter to the right loan, and confirm the result, a task that previously required navigating multiple menus and several manual steps.
The agent runs, reports each step it takes, and flags anything that needs human review. The instructions read like you're briefing a new colleague, not writing a programme.
Beyond automating repetitive workflows, agents can also read attached documents. We demonstrated an agent that reads a PDF, extracts relevant information, and populates a field in Business Central accordingly, opening the door to intelligent document processing without any middleware or third-party tools.
Agents inherit your existing Business Central role profiles and permission sets, so access controls remain firmly in place. You define exactly what the agent can see and touch.
Using Microsoft Copilot Studio, our team also explored a second generation of agents capable of drawing on a curated knowledge base. By connecting an agent to docs.elysys.com our full library of setup and configuration documentation, we can deploy an AI assistant directly inside Business Central that guides clients through system setup, answers configuration questions, and provides real-time help grounded in accurate, Elysys-specific information.
This is something we are actively developing as part of our client success programme.
Agents built in a sandbox environment can be exported and packaged as a standard Business Central extension, then deployed to production by the Elysys team. Once live, they appear alongside your existing tools and can be launched with a single click.
This means the benefits of AI automation can be rolled out safely, with full version control, without exposing production environments to ad hoc experimentation.
Firms that adopt AI-assisted workflows now will have a meaningful operational advantage within the next 12–18 months. The barrier to entry has never been lower, Business Central already includes the infrastructure. What matters is knowing how to configure it correctly and within the right guardrails.
